Notes on Classes & Awards
Classes shown above are:
Class I - Passenger cars using unlimited navigational equipment and computers.
Class II - Trucks and sport/utility vehicles (SUV's), using unlimited navigational equipment and computers.
Class III - Any type vehicle, limited to "Seat of the Pants" (SOP) equipment.
Dalton Class (Touring) - Are not scored but must adhere to the same route and schedule as other teams.  This class participated on a "pass/fail" basis: successful teams received the event's "Dalton Award".

Ice slaloms are scored within two classes: Studded and Non-Studded tires.  The fastest team in each class scored a "0" at each event, other teams received one point for each second slower (scored to .1 second).  The maximum penalty at each slalom event is 10 seconds.

Press on Regardless Award:  A traditional Alcan award, presented to teams or individuals who have pressed on through unusual adversity.

Isuzu "Go Farther" Award:  A perpetual award presented by Isuzu. This goes to the team who best exemplifies the spirit of Isuzu's "Go Farther" slogan.  It is also intended to recognize the accomplishments of our many private entries who compete successfully with sponsored factory teams. This year it was awarded to a team that completed a 200 mile side trip to Valdez ("just because we wanted to see it") in spite of the fact that the leg had been officially dropped from scoring.  It was also awarded Posthumously to "Fast Eddie" Botwick for participation in most Alcan events from 1984 to 1996.

Subaru/Pirelli Sportsmanship Award:  This recognizes a team who best demonstrated the principles of good sportsmanship and cheerful assistance.
* On day #2 the Chinook teams provided replacement driving lights when car 10 hit a deer and destroyed theirs.
* On day #6 they provided a hot lunch for all participants at the Arctic Circle crossing on Dalton Highway.
* On day #8 they stopped to loan a battery when car 11's alternator failed, causing themselves to be late at the next TSD and drop in overall standings.
